Makin' Hay

From the album Geometry

She makes French toast with French bread
She mows to the water’s edge
She’s slow to let you in her head
And she knows what’s been said

Twenty horses pull him through the grass
He’s makin’ hay – makin’ it fast
He seldom lets a day go past
Where he don’t pray that this don’t last

Pioneer days have got to end
They’re looking for that River’s bend
They like to ride up to the County line
It’s just out the backdoor along the fence line

The sun sets on them another day
There was no pot of gold, no easy way
Maybe it’s just best to do as they say
Keep your eye on the sky and keep makin’ hay

As the frogs do their song-thing late at night
with the kids tucked in and just a few lights
They like to talk without words – more by sight
And they know – everything’s right

Pioneer days don’t ever end
And that River’s got plenty more bend
They like to ride up to the County line
It’s just out the backdoor along the fence line
